Rare Connecticut Antique Grandfather ClockHere is a rare connecticut tall case clock that stands 92 tall to the top of the center finial, 19 wide and 10 deep. The clock has an 8 day time and strike brass movement that tsrikes the hours on a bell. The movement has recently been cleaned, oiled and new weight cables installed and is in excellent running condition and is also a very good timekeeper. The clock face has a seconds hand and a calendar dial which are both in good working condition. The clock face is signed daniel burnap, who worked in coventry, connecticut from 1796 to about 1815.
Coventry is now known as andover. Previously burnap worked in east windsor, connecticut from 1786 to 1796. Daniel burnap died in 1838 at the age of 78. Included with the purchase of this clock is a very informative book about daniel burnap, his career as a clockmaker, his shop records, many of burnap's drawings showing layouts of clock movements, different clock dial designs and even a drawing of his unusual tapered piller that he used in his movements. This clock was made in the earyl 1800's. According to daniel burnap's shop records he started making grandfather clocks with white enamel dials in 1800. Before 1800 he made clocks with engraved brass dials. This clock has a typical burnap movement that is easily identified by his unusual tapered pillars between the movement plates and smooth winding barrels. The clock case has beautiful proportions and is made of solid cherryno veneer. The case also appears to have the original finish which has a wonderful mellow patina. The clock case is a typical burnap case design with details like a pagoda top with burnap style fretwork, serpentine shaped waist door and fluted hood and waist columns. These case characteristics are found on many of daniel burnap's clocks. All three glasses in the hodo are original and very wavy with the original putty holding them in place. Here is a wonderful opportunity to own a great piece of american clock history. The clock is ready to proudly display in your home or office and comes complete with the two door keys, original winding crank, a book about daniel burnap and, if desired, easy to follow illustrated set up instructions.
